PETERBOROUGH, N.H. (MyKeeneNow) – The Peterborough Police Department says they will be stepping up enforcement at an intersection that’s become problematic for both pedestrians and motorists.

Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard says that the intersection of Main, Concord, and Pine Streets, known as “Courtesy Corner,” before the installation of the Main Street stop sign has been having several issues, all induced by drivers.

Guinard said not all motorists are yielding to pedestrians in the two crosswalks located at the intersection, vehicles turning onto Main Street from Concord and Pine Streets aren’t using their turn signals, and some drivers are speeding.

In response, Guinard says that Peterborough Police will be increasing their presence in the area to address those issues through enforcement.

By law, drivers are required to yield to pedestrians in a marked crosswalk, and to use turn signals. Failure to do so results in a $62 fine for the first offense, and $124 for subsequent offenses.

The posted speed limit for Concord and Pine Streets in 30 miles per hour and 25 miles per hour on Main Street. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation has posted signs recommending that drivers even slow to 20 miles per hour through that area. Fines for speeding tickets range from $62 to $434.

Guinard is asking all drivers to please comply with state traffic laws, and to drive safely and with respect for other motorists and pedestrians.
