For a long time, I had a television in my bedroom. I used to enjoy getting into bed, sometimes with a snack, and watching episode after episode of Friends, Sex and the City or even The Sopranos.
After feeling like I was watching too much tv, a few months ago, I decided to remove the television set from my room and I feel like it’s made a big and positive change my sleep and the way I wake up.
The more TV people watch before bedtime, the less sleep they get. Studies confirm what we already know to be true: the lure of the screen is just too strong for many to turn off. Additionally, artificial light exposure between dusk and the time we go to bed makes it more difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
For couples, some of your most important, intimate conversations will take place in your bedroom during the waning hours of the day… unless of course, the laptop is sitting on your lap instead.
Don’t rob yourself of this sweet and important time with your significant other for an episode of Game of Thrones instead. Not to mention, couples who keep a tv in their bedroom, get intimate almost half as much as those that do not have a television in their room.
Just as it is better at night, it also makes you more mindful in the morning. Waking up and meditating, reflecting or just sitting in the quiet versus flipping the channel to CNN for the latest and sometimes not so good news to start off your day can really affect the day in front of you.
Remember, your mind and body are working hard throughout the day. Do what you can to protect that sleep time that is so pivotal to overall physical and emotional health.
