April is Distracted Driving Awareness month and the facts are shocking.
A distraction- affected crash can be caused by texting, using a cell phone, adjusting the radio, grooming, eating & drink and smoking. Nine percent of fatal crashes, 15 percent of injury crashes, and 15 percent of all police-reported motor vehicle traffic crashes last year were reported as distracted driving
Every year distracted driving causes approximately 3000 deaths.
There are ways to avoid distracted driving that may save your life or someone else’s.
First and foremost, put your phone away while driving. You can even put it on Do Not Disturb with a message saying you are are driving and not answering calls or texts.
Another method I like to use is putting the phone in the trunk of my car. This is a guarantee I won’t reach for it to answer a call or text.
If you have a passenger in the car, ask them to manage your phone for you.
Be sure you prepare before you drive. Review maps, adjust your radio, eat, and make any phone calls needed before you drive.
